My Passion

I am a full time working mom and I know how life happens faster than you ever dreamt.  I know how your child has a secret look or a special smile.  I know how quickly those can change as they grow and discover new things.

My passion is to learn these looks to capture them so your memories are captured.  My mission is to know my clients because they are so much more than just a picture or a moment in time you are a friend.  An interaction between a son and father, a laughter of brothers, or a secret inside joke in the glance of a husband all of these items I love to capture the moment - create memories.

Thank you.

My Joy

My joy is waking up to a wonderful family.  Dinosaurs lining up my pillow with tugs at the duvet saying wake up mommy.  I have a fabulous "job" where I never have to work.

Thank you.

Starting School – Summer School Family of Learning

Today both my boys started new schools.  This comes one week from when I started my first installment of photography school by attending Skip’s Summer School in Las Vegas.  A week from the start and 5 days from the finish…I still can only say one thing regarding the experience.  WOW!  What a great 3.5 days…WOW.  Someone said it was like drinking water from a fire hose, and I could not agree with that statement more.

The week actually began on Sunday evening with Skip gave his intro and Kosta Mallios spoke about new technology within the photo world.  My mind was racing.  Racing I tell you from ideas on photosynthing to actually building value for our clients through a true archival service.  The possibilities with the current technology are endless, and ever expanding as we continue to make these quantum shifts in technology.

Monday, started with Bambi Cantrell.  Now I had never heard her speak, but was truly looking forward to capturing at least one nugget from a true pioneer for women in the photo industry.  She is a leader through and thrue and it was obvious in her poise, presentation and spoken word.  She is a gift to those in this industry.

The list goes on and on from Robert Evans to Tony Corbell, Scott Bourne (who had an amazing recap a must read!) to Jerry Ghionis, Kevin Kubota to Ron Dawson…seriously the line up  was absolutely outstanding those are just the beginning.  I will make sure to make this and WPPI in my regular line up as the ability to learn so much must be actualized.

One of my highlights was Tuesday morning when Dane spoke.  I saw Dane Sanders last June in Solana Beach at his workshop.  To say this was life changing would be an understatement.  To say it was inspirational would not do this man’s message justice.  Tuesday was nothing like this.  I later found out that Dane changed his presentation at the last minute.  It was something I had not heard before, but as tears streamed down my face I was touched.  With a room full of 400 other people I felt selfish, but it felt as if his message was meant just for me.  The message of remaining original and true to oneself is a battle I think we all live with.  Sometimes we worry of acceptance or failure but we must remain true to who we are.  True to know that every missed basket is a step that must occur to be able to truly win and be a champion.

Here is a little video of the Fast Track Photographer forum meetup:

So on this morning one week from when my adventure climbed the next peak, my kiddo, R, and husband, B, both started their first day of their adventure.  R is starting bilingual preschool, and B is starting his Graduate program for his Masters in Earth Science (note: I have no idea what that really means just how to say it) but with both their adventures and mine as well…we are a family.  Learning, Living and Growing Together because really isn’t that what life is about?

How to Prioritize – A New Approach – stacyZiegler Boulder Photographer Reinvention

I sat here today wondering what to come and write about.  I read the comments to the post “The What” and it seems that some of you are either performing your own “requirements analysis” or will be making your prioritizations so I thought it might be a good time to discuss an effective way to prioritize.  I see people do priorities down the list from 1 to N, but from a project perspective this never seemed to work simply because we don’t then see all the items that are essential just to function.  We end up looking at our next on the list vs. looking at the whole.

The first step is really envisioning our “business case” writing our story if you will of what this looks like.  After this is done I will list all the whats to meet this, as I talked about in the last post.  Only AFTER all the whats are identified can I prioritize.  In this process of my dream life there are two steps I see that need to occur before I can even think about the prioritizing.  First, is my vision strong enough?  Do I have everything that I see in my future, our story as a family and a business owner, down and created so anyone can understand?  This is my own personal “business case”.  From here I will need to write down all the WHATS that need to occur.  A short example list could be:

  1. Have a home
  2. Have home in safe neighborhood
  3. Have home in neighborhood where children will attend a top school
  4. Have home payment not exceed 1/4th of our monthly family income
  5. Have a home on 1/2 an acre
  6. Have a greenhouse in back yard

Now these are just examples of different “whats” you see there is no thought here they are short and sweet.  Mostly they are active verb frases.  Now here is the key – Prioritization.  For many prioritization is ranking.  In the case of requirments analysis the prioritization is done on 4 levels, P1 thorugh P4.  P1 – Absolutely must have.  The project, “Dream Life” in this example, cannot work without it.  You see if this is ranked you woud naturally go for #1 then 2, and etc, but really if #3 is still a P1 priority and you don’t do it.  Your project will fail.  Now this is a bit subjective because of course one would live and thus “function” without a house, as in this example, but where our  clearly defined vision/business case is defined it is a “must have”.   For my example here, requirements 1,2 & 4 are all “P1’s” my dream will not function without these items.  Once all the absolutes are labeled you can start over and outline the P2 requirements; this is what is really wanted, makes the “project” better and is highly desirable, but if you did not have it your dream would still function.  Now for me here #3 is a P2 because I would be okay driving our children to a school if needed.  We have charter schools here so the neighborhood school, although is our first preference is not absolutely mandatory for meeting my “project”.  Does that make sense – it would make our project truly better, but would still work without it.

We will cover the P3’s and P4’s later on.  First the most important thing is to develop the vision;  come up with the “business case”.  Defining all the whats that are needed for this and then putting into the first 2 major buckets.  These two levels will cover about 80% of all the whats that are listed for the plan in all of our projects (a.k.a. lives).

Hopefully you can see how just using four levels of priorities is liberating and lets us figure out what is deep in our souls and our true needs.  I know one of my “P1’s” is to laugh from the belly.  Here is a picture I found today of myself doing just that.  I am off to smile and laugh and I hope you are as well.

The What – stacyZiegler Boulder Photographer

Last week I came and talked about patience.  One of the items I really had not thought about until yesterday were this – My Priorities.  I was running around trying to do everything that I was/have been getting swamped.  You see yesterday it was if a big fist called “Priority” sucker punched me in the stomach. Everything that happened to me yesterday, from phone conversations, to a huge conversation with my mentor, to what chapter I picked up in my book and read, to stinking Facebook posts from random others…led to one thing…priorities.

So here is a bit of a background of stacyZiegler – my ENTIRE day job consists of me making WHAT lists for clients and then prioritizing them according to their needs.  I basically have systems and I just say WHAT needs to happen.  There is no amount of why or how in this analysis just what.  I relate it back to my clients with the term Christmas or Birthday list.  Not my favorite analogy but they get it.  I hold meetings and figure out what they need.  Be it a web interface for a report, or the entire personal computer shopping interface, to database design for a large financial company.  They all have one thing in common I help them analyze and develop WHAT lists.  What they need to accomplish their goals.  Now here is the clincher…the nugget if you will.  Yesterday, I realized I have NEVER EVER done this in my own life.  What the heck right?  I am able to look in my clients’ eyes and tell them what they have to do to accomplish their goals, but I have never looked at myself and ask if I am imploding. Why?  I really have to think about it.  Call it the pleasing others syndrome, but whatever it is I remember this going all the way back to High School.  I remember asking my dad, the high school counselor, to take photography class my dad replied, “No, it takes 2 periods out of your day and you need all your time for college prep.”  When I wanted to take Jewelry or Photography in College I got, “No you need to just do computers and business; that is where you will get a job.  The others can be hobbies” I never thought to say, “This is a PRIORITY for me because it is WHAT I Want” Never.  I listened to others. I mean I got A’s in school and business so they must have been right. What if I did not get A’s in the other things? Would the world end? Would I not get the job at a top firm? Would I not be the best? Would they not be proud? I did everything for them.  I guess you could say I thought my parents were my clients. I thought they were my clients…but they were not … I was my client.  I dropped the ball on myself.  At 34 years of age I am looking at what are MY priorities and what are MY WANTS.  I can not think of the How.  How will come later during design.  Right now I am in my own little “requirements analysis” phase of my life.  I am on the path of WHAT – What for myself, what for my life, what for my family, what for our future…

This is getting exciting.

Life Is about Fun! StacyZiegler Boulder Photographer

Life is about fun.  One of the biggest joys I get when photographing weddings is seeing the joy that surrounds the couple.  I know it could sound cliche or trite, but really every time I go to a wedding and see the joy of friends I remember mine.  You could say I am in love with love or whatever but really it just life.  I am in love with LIFE.  I love people who realize this life is all they have so have fun with it.  Last Friday I shot a wedding with Steve Stanton again and I swear he has a way of having the best clients.  I love shooting with Steve because I know his clients and their family or friends love life!
Here is a quick little preview and one picture I just thought now these people know how to have FUN!  IMG 5940 1024x682 Life Is about Fun! StacyZiegler Boulder Photographer

Actually it was a wedding weekend marathon.  We shot three weddings and they all were unique and they all we AWESOME!  I will come back with more.  We have had a crazy week here at the Z household.  I got new glasses, haircut, my mother in law came for R’s upcoming birthday, we saw Walking with the Dinosaurs…and it is only Thursday!  Sorry I have been MIA here.  I have a backlog of fun stuff to share.
Love your life with peace & joy!

stacyLand….Another Year of being stacyZiegler wife, friend, mother

Where life began…many say when you are born life begins, but for me my life as it is now began 6 years ago yesterday.  You see that is when I promised to love, honor, and cherish the kindest man I have known.  He picks up my shoes and puts them away.  He makes my coffee every morning on the French press.  He still tucks me in every night.  I hope every day I can fill up his “love cup” as much as he fills up mine.  I tried yesterday by going on a little hike.  Well lets just say…my idea of hiking is having the escalator break at Nordie’s.  It is sad when your 3 year old is kicking your tush up the mountain.  But B loves to hike and go outdoors so I hope his “love cup” was a bit fuller.   I brought along the Holga so as soon as I get the roll developed I will have to share!

Every year in July I go and look at my photographers website.  He still has a collage of our wedding there (if you wanna look click here).  I swear he captured so many moments that I would not remember without the images.  The day is still 6 years later more a blur of love, emotion, movement and fun.  But I can always look at that collage and my album and remember.  I strive to provide my clients the same.  Oh and Gary – Please don’t ever take those collages down!  I LOVE THEM STILL!

Good Night everyone.  Tommorrow is my parent’s 48th – YUP FORTY-EIGHTH wedding anniversary.  If they could make it work I know anyone can.  They are still pretty funny.  Just today I got to hear my mom tell my dad to not play checkers on her computer because he messed up her email!  Gotta luv the ‘rents and their love!

StacyLand ~ Slow Down…Smell The Flowers…Learn…Grow

Patience is a virtue, but in our lives today we rush around without a thought of the earth and the organic nature life has around us.  Flowers do not go to McFlowers to grow faster, but here we are as people driving through fast food, eating lunch at our desk, drinking copious amount of coffee (which I love all too much) all to go fast.  Perform better.  Win the race.  What if life was not about the race, but about the moments of growth before the finish.  Appreciate what we are bud to flower life in the moments in between.   If we just let nature go the course in our spring the rewards are quite beautiful.

stacyLand ~ Mommy I’m being shy

The world is a funny place.  We hold so much potential in our selves.  We start this world with any choice we want in front of us.  We can be brave and climb the ladder to the top of jungle gym or we can sit on the bench pretending to be shy.  I saw my son allow his fear to paralyze him from pure enjoyment this afternoon.

We sat at the local park enjoying ourselves.  R was running up the steps, climbing the ladder thing, sliding down and having fun.   Another little boy arrived and my son immediately ran and hid behind my legs.  At which point he told me he was “being shy”.  He had a moment to make a new friend, but allowed his fears to stop his joy.  How many times have we as children or adults allowed fear stop us from our true potential?  Where is the top of my jungle gym?  Life is too short to not play on the playground.  Live our lives as we deem; make ourselves and those around us happy.

My declaration this week is to not allow myself to be crippled by the fear; to not be “shy”.  I declare to document my fear as much as success because both contain moments for learning.

And because it is not a post without a picture or something…or because you could say I think my kid is all too cute…

Boulder – Green In July – Stacy Ziegler Boulder Photographer

Last weekend I had the joy of going out and spending the morning with a beautiful Boulder family.  The Strokers are fantastic.  The dad Joe is an electrician the owner of Green Star Energy here in Boulder.  Green Star specializes in renewable energy and solar system installations.  I loved talking with Joe about all the new initiatives that are going on right now.  The new “Green” Energy and business many companies are undertaking right now is dear to my heart so this was truly a treat!

In fact just last week I launched my new proofing section.  I am partnering with another lab who is certified Green.  I am very excited.  Now all the products are not only produced to a higher standard I demand for my clients, but they ship straight to you and thus eliminating extra shipping and wasted energy on that end as well.  Just another aspect of staying true to being eco-conscious.

Here is the fantastic location I had.  Could Boulder be any more beautiful right now?

I know California is my home and it has beautiful light and beaches, but man oh man.  Look at those mountains!  That meadow!  I was in HEAVEN on earth!

Here are a few favorites of this gorgeous family.  Mom is set to have a baby brother or sister for little K.  I cannot wait to meet the next addition!

StacyLand – The Dare…a Breach of Etiquette

When I attended Dane’s workshop last month I made a declaration.  It was to write every day, and continue to make a declaration to myself however small to continue to grow towards my goals.  I originally said I was going to write in my journal.  My fears and accomplishments.  Dane TRIPLE DOGGED DARED me to write this on the Fast Track Photographer forums.  Oh man he went “straight for the jugular” just as Ralphie said.  I felt like I was about to put my tongue on the flag pole I tell you.  Dane was Schwartz!  But it really has been great!  I am stuck and screaming, but I love it!

Well during my first mentor session, my mentor, Melinda Bunker, totally one upped Dane!  She asked me to make the “StacyLand” posts once a week here on the blog.  Yup here I am and will remain raw to the soul out for you all to see.  I am nervous and excited all at the same time.  I am going to one up my mentor even and make the declaration now – there will not be one post a week here for “StacyLand” but at LEAST TWO!  So here we go folks…you ready for the ride?  Come back to find out what else I am doing each day to reach my dreams.  If I inspire ONE person to laugh, smile or reach their own, I will have accomplished more than I could ever hope for!
So do you all have your tickets for the ride and an appetite for Churros?  Because you have just entered the NEW Happiest Place on Earth.

Love YOUR Life with Peace & Joy!
